Fubara Impeachment Process Not Suspended — Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has clarified that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, is ongoing and has not been suspended, dismissing reports suggesting otherwise. The Assembly said the proceedings are being conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, the lawmakers said the impeachment process, which began on Thursday, January 8, 2026, remains on course under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The Assembly disclosed that two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct have been issued against the governor and the deputy governor and formally served on them by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, with the House awaiting their responses.

Lawmakers accused some individuals and media platforms of deliberately misleading the public by spreading claims that the impeachment process had been halted. They described such reports as false narratives intended to cause disaffection between the legislature and the public, insisting they would not be deterred by intimidation or threats.

The impeachment proceedings stem from allegations read during plenary on Thursday, including the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding of statutory funds, and alleged disobedience of a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial autonomy. The process follows renewed political tension in the state after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike accused Fubara of breaching a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu in 2025.
