The people of Rivers State have lauded the administration of Governor Siminialayi Fubara for its commitment to bringing healthcare closer to residents, particularly in rural communities.
During a series of engagements held recently, beneficiaries of the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) expressed gratitude for the Fubara’s policies, which have made quality healthcare more accessible and affordable.
Idanye Oruigoni, the Head of Public Relations Unit, RIVCHPP noted that at a town hall meeting in Opobo Nkoro Local Government Area, enrollees of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) testified to the transformative impact of RIVCHPP.
Many recounted how the programme had enabled them to access medical services without financial strain, while urging the government to post an additional medical doctor to the Model Primary Health Centre in Opobo Town to ease the workload on the current officer in charge.
Medical officials echoed the beneficiaries’ views. Dr. Dennis Alege Soberekon, Medical Officer of Health for Opobo Nkoro, and Dr. Nnamdi Eze, Officer in charge of the town’s health centre, said RIVCHPP has significantly reduced mortality rates and encouraged residents to seek medical care promptly.
Speaking on behalf of RIVCHPP, Dr. Emmyson Emeka Emordi, Director of Administration, noted that only 2,831 residents in the area were enrolled under the scheme, with a mere 402 linked to their National Identification Numbers (NIN).
He stressed that improving NIN registration is critical for ensuring that more residents benefit from the programme.
Local authorities have pledged support. Mrs. Gladys Daniel Legg-Jack, Vice-Chairman of Opobo Nkoro Council and Supervisor for Health, assured that the council would collaborate with the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) to facilitate registration for residents, particularly those who may not qualify for BHCPF assistance.
Meanwhile, advocacy visits to traditional rulers in Etche Local Government Area further highlighted the administration’s inclusive approach. HRH Eze Ken Nwala JP and King Dr. Samuel Amaechi JP welcomed RIVCHPP officials, promising to mobilise their subjects to register for the scheme.
Eze Nwala went a step further by sponsoring 20 residents present at his palace to enrol in RIVCHPP’s Rivcare package.
RIVCHPP board member, Pharm. Promise Anele, emphasised that it would be a disservice to residents if they were not informed about these health initiatives, urging communities to take full advantage of the governor’s policies.
The engagements underscore the Fubara administration’s determination to extend healthcare benefits to every corner of Rivers State, ensuring that government programmes directly impact the lives of the people.
