The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Nsukka Unit Command has appealed to motorists and other road users in Nsukka, Enugu State, to shun distractions while driving in order to reach their destinations safely.

The command made the appeal in Nsukka on Wednesday during the 2025 “Ember Months” enlightenment and sensitisation campaign for motorists, tricycle and motorcycle operators and other road users in Nsukka LGA.

The campaign team, comprising FRSC officials, special marshals and National Youth Service Corps members, moved round Nsukka town sensitising the people on the importance of safe driving.

The also addressed motorists, tricycle operators and motorcyclists in their various parks.

The Commander, FRSC Nsukka Unit Command, Mrs Mary Ahumbe, said the objective of the campaign was to ensure safe driving.

Ahumbe said that the sensitisation campaign was a directive from the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to ensure zero accident during the ember months.

She described the theme for this year’s campaign, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving”, as instructive.

She said that FRSC, under the able leadership of Mohammed “is committed to ensuring safer roads during the high-traffic festive season”, if motorists and other road users would abide by safety rules.

“Motorists should take responsibility for their safety and stop distracted driving as records have shown human factor as a major cause of accidents in the country.

“FRSC is appealing to all Nigerians to adopt safer road habits as the year draws to a close.

“This campaign is also for commuters, because most times commuters mount unnecessary pressure on drivers that result in accident.

“As a commuter, if you know you have appointment by 11.am and where you are going will take you one hour, please make sure you come out around 9am to board bus not by 10.30am then you start mounting unnecessary pressure on the driver to speed up,” she said.

Ahumbe further advised motorists against overloading, driving under the influence of alcohol, and use of phones, which had caused many accidents.

Meanwhile, some residents of Nsukka have commended FRSC for the enlightenment and sensitisation campaign to motorists and other road users.

They said it would go a long way to remind motorists, tricycle operators, motorcyclists on the need to drive safe so that they would reach their destinations safely during “Ember Months’.

Mr Raphel Eze, a tricycle operator, a bus driver, Mr Sunday Ozioko, and a motorcyclist, Mr Ejike Ezugwu, said in separate remarks that what FRSC had done reminded them that ember months are here again.

They promised to drive with caution so that they would be alive to take care of their families.

They also promised to spread the message of safe driving to their colleagues, who did not attend the sensitisation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that flyers with different inscriptions, such as “Take responsibility for your safety, avoid distracted driving”, were shared during the campaign.

Other inscriptions included “Safe driving starts with your voice: speak out against reckless driving”, “Speak out! your voice can stop the crash”, among others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
