Fresh graduates of the University of Ilorin have expressed immense joy and pride in being part of the institution’s legacy, describing their time at the University as transformative and rewarding.
The new alumni, who spoke with newsmen during the University’s 40th Convocation Ceremonies held between Wednesday, October 22, and Thursday, October 23, 2025, said graduating during the University’s Golden Jubilee celebrations was a special honour.
Dr. Ibukunoluwa Adedeji, a graduate of Agronomy, said her experience at the University equipped her with resilience and adaptability.
“The University made me strong and agile. Anyone who survives the academic rigour of the University of Ilorin can survive anywhere,” she said.
Dr. Adedeji, who earlier earned her first degree in Agronomy from Unilorin in 1995 before joining the Nigerian Sugar Research Institute, described the University as a true grooming ground for excellence. She expressed gratitude to her lecturers and staff for their guidance and support throughout her academic journey.
Similarly, Dr. Dahood Owolabi Beki, a Chief Lecturer at the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, who bagged a Ph.D. in Statistics, said his graduation marked a lifelong dream fulfilled.
“It has always been my desire to obtain a certificate from the University of Ilorin. Today, I’m proud to be one of its alumni,” he said, adding that he previously earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
For Mr. Ayooluwa Akinsika, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, the University’s academic discipline shaped his mindset and work ethic.
“Passing through Unilorin was not easy because of its rigorous training, but I’m glad I did,” he said. “I’ll definitely encourage my children and relatives to study here to enjoy the same standard of excellence.”
Miss Gift Bamigbola, a graduate of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, described her experience as unforgettable.
“The University of Ilorin gave me memories and lessons I will carry for life,” she said.
Miss Salamat Moshood, who graduated in Biochemistry, said studying at Unilorin was a unique opportunity that deepened her family’s long-standing connection to the institution.
“Many members of my family, including my elder sister, also graduated from this University,” she said, adding that she plans to return for postgraduate studies.
Similarly, Miss Aramide Mohammed of the Department of Agricultural Economics expressed gratitude to Allah for seeing her through her studies.
“I’m happy and thankful that my academic journey at Unilorin ended in success during such a historic milestone for the University,” she said.
Also speaking, Miss Zeenat Lawal, a graduate of Physiotherapy, said her graduation continued a family tradition.
“My mother obtained all her three degrees from the University of Ilorin, and I’m proud to continue that legacy,” she said. “Having attended Unilorin Secondary School as well, I feel deeply connected to this institution and plan to return for my postgraduate degrees.”
The new graduates pledged to be worthy ambassadors of the University wherever they find themselves, promising to give back to their alma mater in meaningful ways.
They also commended the University for its enduring commitment to excellence in learning and character, wishing it greater success as it continues to advance national and human development.
