The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Gombe Operations Office, has confirmed its intervention in a fire outbreak that gutted parts of the Timber Market in Gombe metropolis.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday, the agency said the incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m.

Preliminary investigations by NEMA indicated that the fire was caused by an electrical spark.
The agency disclosed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident. However, goods and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the inferno.
NEMA noted that the exact number of affected traders is yet to be ascertained, as a detailed damage and needs assessment is still ongoing.
According to the agency, emergency response efforts were jointly coordinated with the Federal Fire Service, the Gombe State Fire Service, and the Gombe State University Fire Unit.
The swift intervention of the agencies helped to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other sections of the market.
Other stakeholders present at the scene included the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Nigerian Army, NEMA Grassroots Emergency Volunteers (GEVs), as well as members of the media.
NEMA commended the level of inter-agency collaboration during the operation, describing it as effective and crucial in minimizing losses.
The agency also advised traders and the general public to strictly observe fire safety precautions, particularly regarding electrical installations, to prevent similar incidents.
NEMA assured that further updates would be provided as the assessment of the incident continues.
