Manchester United suffered their first defeat under interim manager Michael Carrick after a dramatic late goal from William Osula secured a 2-1 victory for ten-man Newcastle United in a pulsating encounter as reported by Metro.
The match remained relatively quiet for much of the opening period before a chaotic spell unfolded in the closing minutes of the first half.
The hosts were handed an early let-off when Bryan Mbeumo squandered a clear opportunity from close range, failing to convert from just a few yards out.
Moments later, controversy struck as Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card and was dismissed for what the referee judged to be simulation inside the penalty area. The decision reduced Newcastle to ten players and sparked protests from the home side.
Despite the setback, Newcastle soon found themselves ahead. The referee pointed to the spot after Bruno Fernandes was ruled to have fouled Anthony Gordon inside the box.
Gordon calmly stepped forward and converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Newcastle the lead.
However, United responded quickly before the break. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Casemiro rose highest in the area to power a header into the net and restore parity.
The second half saw Newcastle show resilience despite their numerical disadvantage. They remained organised defensively while looking for chances on the counterattack.
Their persistence paid off in the dying moments. In the 91st minute, Osula produced a composed finish, curling the ball into the far corner to hand Newcastle a dramatic late winner and condemn Manchester United to Carrick’s first loss in charge.
