Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced that the Federal Government will begin the rollout of 10,000 electric tricycles in August as part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transportation sector and improve mobility across the country.
Shettima disclosed this on Monday while receiving members of Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 during a courtesy visit.
According to the vice president, the first phase of the programme will be implemented through the North East Development Commission, which will distribute the electric tricycles across the North-East region.
Expansion Planned Nationwide
Shettima revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has already approved plans to extend the initiative beyond the North-East through the country’s regional development commissions.
The move, he said, forms part of a broader transportation transformation agenda aimed at improving connectivity, reducing transportation costs, and creating a more efficient logistics system nationwide.
According to the vice president, the administration is focused on replacing Nigeria’s fragmented transportation framework with an integrated network that seamlessly links various modes of transport.
President Tinubu’s priority is to move Nigeria from a fragmented transport system to an integrated logistics chain where ports, rail lines, CNG-powered trucks, inland waterways, airports and local feeder roads work together to support commerce, agriculture, industry and national integration,” Shettima stated.
Focus on CNG and Logistics Infrastructure
The vice president explained that the government’s transport reform programme is built around several key initiatives, including the nationwide adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), modernization of seaports, and the expansion of logistics infrastructure.
He noted that these reforms are intended to improve operational efficiency and working conditions for stakeholders across the transportation value chain, including road transporters, railway operators, maritime workers, aviation professionals, and pipeline sector operators.
