The Federal Government has reassured students, parents, and schools regarding subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum, amid ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) registration.
Officials emphasised that there are no restrictions on the subjects students may select, as long as choices are properly guided.
Students enjoy freedom in choosing subjects
In a statement, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, clarified that students are free to choose any approved subjects with guidance from school authorities, parents, or certified school counsellors.
They added that students specialising in science may also opt for social sciences or arts subjects, and vice versa, highlighting the curriculum’s flexibility to accommodate diverse academic interests and future career goals.
Regarding Information and Communication Technology, the ministers confirmed that the subject has been renamed Digital Technology.
Updated curriculum offers flexibility and vocational options
They assured students previously studying ICT that they remain eligible to register for the Digital Technology examination, as the change is purely terminological.
The ministry also addressed vocational subjects, noting that six trade-related courses are now officially included. Students may register for these subjects only if they have been taught them at school, and there is no obligation to take a trade subject if the school does not offer it.
Reiterating their commitment to education, the ministers urged parents, school administrators, and examination bodies to provide accurate guidance and support during the registration process.
They assured that the government is committed to a smooth, coordinated, and transparent transition to the updated curriculum.
