The Federal Government has advanced plans for the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation high-throughput communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B, following approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
The satellites, to be deployed by the Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, are expected to significantly expand Nigeria’s satellite capacity and boost broadband, broadcasting, enterprise and critical communications services.
The development is also expected to extend reliable connectivity to underserved, unserved and hard-to-reach communities, while strengthening national communications resilience and reducing the country’s dependence on external satellite infrastructure.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, described the FEC approval as a major milestone for the company and Nigeria’s digital development.
She said the new satellites would strengthen Nigeria’s national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country, stressing that NIGCOMSAT’s priority was to translate the investment into measurable benefits for Nigerians.
According to her, the project would also position NIGCOMSAT for greater impact in the global satellite and digital economy.
The additional satellite capacity will support high-capacity broadband, broadcasting, enterprise connectivity, government services and emerging digital applications, while complementing terrestrial broadband networks in locations where conventional infrastructure is difficult or expensive to deploy.
The satellites are expected to improve access to digital services in education, healthcare, agriculture, financial services, broadcasting, enterprise and government, while strengthening the resilience of Nigeria’s communications infrastructure.
Beyond connectivity, NigComSat-2A and 2B are expected to provide more secure and resilient communications for critical national requirements, including national security and defence.
The project is also projected to create opportunities across the country’s satellite and digital technology value chain, including telecommunications, broadcasting, ground infrastructure, systems integration, technical support, satellite terminals and other satellite-enabled services.
It will further support indigenous capacity development through knowledge transfer, local manufacturing, professional development and the growth of specialised expertise in satellite engineering, network operations, cybersecurity and emerging space technologies.
With FEC approval secured, the acquisition and deployment process will now proceed to the next stage, including engagement with technology partners, contract finalisation, technical planning and other preparatory activities required for the manufacture, launch and deployment of the satellites.
The satellites will be delivered by Thales Alenia Space of France and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), with NIGCOMSAT leading implementation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and other relevant stakeholders.
The investment is expected to expand NIGCOMSAT’s service capacity, increase utilisation of Nigeria’s national satellite assets and contribute to the emergence of a more commercially viable Nigerian satellite and space-sector ecosystem.
NIGCOMSAT is a Federal Government-owned satellite communications company responsible for managing and commercialising Nigeria’s communications satellite assets. It provides satellite-enabled services in broadband connectivity, broadcasting, enterprise communications, government services and other strategic national areas.
The company said the project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader investment in digital infrastructure and national connectivity under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
