FG launches ₦50m grant to support student-led innovations

The Federal Government has unveiled the Student Venture Capital Grant, a new initiative providing equity-free grants of up to ₦50 million to student-led startups.

The programme, announced by the Ministry of Education, is designed to support innovations in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM).

The President has challenged us to look for the next Moonshot within our tertiary institutions. We are not just looking for projects; we are scouting for future Nigerian Unicorns,” said Education Minister Tunji Alausa.

The grant aims to fund ventures addressing real-world challenges with clear potential for scale and commercialisation, offering students a pathway from idea to market.

Full support system for beneficiaries

Successful applicants will benefit from mentorship, incubation, and access to tools to strengthen their ventures.

The Ministry also announced a partnership with Google to enhance the programme’s evaluation process.

Google’s Gemini AI will power automated assessments, while all applicants will receive a one-year Gemini Pro licence along with premium learning resources.

Our goal is to ensure students begin their entrepreneurial journey with the best tools globally. We are building a powerful innovation funnel from idea to market domination,” the Ministry explained.

Applicants should demonstrate scalability, market relevance, and the potential to solve critical national or global challenges,” the statement added.

How to apply

The application portal, svcg.education.gov.ng, is now open to students in accredited tertiary institutions.

Interested participants are advised to submit proposals promptly, ensuring all required information and documents are completed for smooth evaluation.
