The Federal Government has initiated a public consultation to gather opinions on measures to safeguard children online, including the possibility of age restrictions on social media platforms. The move aims to develop policies that balance opportunities for learning and creativity with the need for online safety.
Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, announced the initiative on his official X account, highlighting both the benefits and risks of internet use for children. He noted that while the internet fosters learning and communication, it also exposes children to cyberbullying, harmful content, exploitation, misuse of personal data, and challenges linked to artificial intelligence.
The consultation seeks public input on potential policy approaches such as age verification systems, platform accountability measures, and enhanced regulatory oversight. Dr Tijani emphasized that contributions from Nigerians are essential to ensure that any adopted framework reflects national priorities and respects children’s rights.
The initiative aligns with international trends, as countries like Australia have implemented outright bans on social media use for children under 16. It reflects Nigeria’s commitment to adopting evidence-based strategies to address the risks posed by the digital environment.
Dr Tijani urged parents, educators, youth, digital professionals, and other stakeholders to participate in the survey to shape safer online spaces for children. Interested parties can provide feedback via the official survey link shared by the minister.
