FG declares Wednesday, Thursday public holidays for Eid-ul-Adha celebration

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Monday.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

The minister said the declaration reflects the Federal Government’s respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims observing the sacred festival.

Tunji-Ojo also extended warm felicitations to Muslim faithful in Nigeria and across the diaspora on the Eid-ul-Adha celebration.

He described Eid-ul-Adha as a festival of deep spiritual significance rooted in the values of sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity.

The minister further urged Nigerians to use the festive period for prayers and sober reflection for the continued peace, security, and prosperity of the country.

The Federal Government reiterated the need for Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence and national unity during the celebration.

Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to reflect on the values of sacrifice, compassion, and support for one another, particularly the less privileged in society.

The minister also stressed the importance of prayers and collective efforts toward strengthening peace and stability across the country.

Nigeria’s multi-religious composition, split almost evenly between Christians and Muslims, means major religious celebrations from both faiths are often recognised as national public holidays.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir, is one of the most important festivals in Islam. The celebration commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, with Muslims across the world marking the occasion through prayers, charity, and the symbolic sacrifice of animals, particularly rams.

Ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, ram prices across major livestock markets in Abuja have surged sharply, with premium breeds reportedly selling for as high as N1.5 million.
