FG Approves $1bn Lagos Port Modernisation Project

The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion port modernisation project for Lagos, signalling a major push to upgrade Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency across the nation’s seaports.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the approval during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference held in Lagos. The conference was themed “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria.”

Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the minister said the Lagos Port Modernisation Project is part of a wider government initiative to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector for global competitiveness through advanced infrastructure, smart technology, and improved cargo handling.

“We are working closely with all stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and curbs corruption,” Oyetola said.

He explained that the $1 billion Lagos port upgrade will serve as a model for similar projects across the country, adding that procurement processes have already begun for the modernisation of ports outside Lagos to ensure equitable development across all maritime corridors.

Oyetola stressed that the reforms reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening logistics performance, boosting competitiveness, and positioning Nigeria as a leading maritime trade and investment hub in West Africa.

He also highlighted the success of the Deep Blue Project, which he said has contributed to Nigeria’s record of zero piracy incidents over the past three years, improving maritime security and investor confidence.

“Since the establishment of the Ministry, we have focused on reform and institutional strengthening. Through initiatives like the Deep Blue Project, we are safeguarding our maritime domain, encouraging investment, and reducing the cost of doing business,” the minister added.
