When Nigerian media personality Chibuzor Onwurah decided not to replace his broken TV last December, he didn’t imagine it would transform his family’s daily life. What started as an experiment quickly became a new way of living.
Life without screens brought the family closer
According to Onwurah, the decision to stay without a television for six months turned out to be the best one his family ever made.
With no screen dominating their evenings, his children began reading more, playing together, and spending more time outdoors with friends.
“As a family, we talk more, laugh more, cook together, play games, and actually hang out,” he shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Replaced movie nights with family activities
Instead of watching shows, the family began creating their own entertainment. “On Saturday, we hosted our own family sip and paint with homemade meat pie, chicken wings, and puff puff,” Onwurah wrote. “The whole day turned into laughter and connection instead of everyone behind screens.”
The change, he said, helped restore genuine bonding and communication that screens often interrupt.
Ten months Later, no looking back
Ten months into the experiment, the Onwurahs still haven’t bought a new TV and they don’t plan to. “Screentime is way down, family time is way up,” he said, calling it the best family experiment of all time.
Onwurah’s story has since sparked conversations online about the growing need for screen-free moments in families, especially in a digital age where real connection is easily lost.
