Senior Advocate of Nigeria Femi Falana has revisited the controversial demolition of Maroko in 1990, describing the incident as an example of how urban development policies can disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.
Falana made the remarks in a video interview shared by Symfoni TV, where he reflected on the historical implications of the demolition and its impact on discussions about housing rights and social equity in Lagos.
Maroko was a densely populated waterfront settlement that was demolished by authorities in 1990. At the time, officials argued that the area posed environmental and safety risks to residents. However, Falana questioned the justification given for the action, claiming that the outcome of the demolition suggested a different motive.
According to him, the community was cleared under the claim that residents were living in unsafe conditions. He alleged that after the demolition, the land was sand-filled and later allocated to affluent individuals, eventually becoming part of what is now referred to as New Victoria Island.
“In the case of Maroko in 1990, the same set of lawless ruling class demolished it. They claimed that the people there were endangered, but what did they do? They sand-filled the place and distributed it to the rich in what they now call New Victoria Island,” Falana stated.
He noted that the Maroko demolition remains a significant reference point in debates surrounding urban planning, housing policy, and the protection of low-income communities in Nigeria.
Falana emphasized that government decisions regarding urban redevelopment should carefully consider both the immediate and long-term effects on residents, particularly those living in vulnerable settlements.
According to him, development policies should strike a balance between modernization goals and the rights and welfare of citizens who may be displaced by such projects.
The remarks have renewed conversations about historical housing policies in Lagos and the broader challenge of ensuring inclusive urban development that protects communities while addressing the need for infrastructure and modernization.
