A former senator from Kaduna has issued a strong warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following a viral video showing his physical confrontation with soldiers in Abuja.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the former lawmaker, Shehu Sani, praised Wike’s performance but cautioned him against such encounters.
He said, “Wike is doing an excellent job in Abuja but should not be encouraged to do this kind of stunt with soldiers.”
Heated Confrontation at the Site
The incident happened on Tuesday when Wike and officials of the FCT Administration (FCTA) clashed with soldiers guarding a disputed property.
A video circulating on social media showed Wike in a heated exchange with the soldiers who had blocked FCTA officials from entering the site.
Wike insisted that the soldiers had no authority to prevent his team’s access since the property lacked proper documentation.
In the viral clip, he was heard saying, “Shut up, keep quiet, you are a fool. As at the time I graduated, you were still in primary school.”
The minister warned the soldiers against intimidating government officials and mentioned that he had contacted the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) over the issue.
He said, “You send soldiers to intimidate who? We are all from this country. If not for the CDS who spoke to me now, you would have to kill everybody here. I’m not one of those you can intimidate.”
Aide Accuses Ex-Naval Chief of Illegal Construction
Reacting to the incident, Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, claimed that the clash began when officials tried to stop an illegal construction project.
He accused former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, of deploying armed personnel to guard the property after being warned to stop building without valid title documents or approval.
Olayinka alleged that the soldiers threatened to shoot anyone who interfered with the project. He added that Wike only visited the site after speaking with the CDS.
As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the FCTA has released an official statement on the matter.
