The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has revealed that he met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the prolonged detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore disclosed that during their meeting, the former president acknowledged the urgent need to resolve Kanu’s case and promised to meet with President Bola Tinubu over the matter.

Jonathan acknowledges need for urgent action

In a post shared via his official X handle on Friday, Sowore wrote: “Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu.

“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.”

Sowore added that Jonathan’s assurance to engage with President Tinubu offered hope that concrete steps might soon be taken toward Kanu’s release.

Calls for justice gain momentum across political lines

According to Sowore, Jonathan has now joined a growing number of Nigerians—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and former Senator Shehu Sani—who have publicly called for justice in Kanu’s case.

He noted that Kanu remains in detention for championing the issue of marginalisation in Nigeria, stressing that his continued incarceration is unjust.

Sowore urges leaders to unite for Kanu’s release

Reiterating his call for unity and justice, Sowore urged political, cultural, and religious leaders across the country—especially those from the South East—to lend their voices to the campaign for Kanu’s release.

He specifically mentioned figures such as Peter Obi, Charles Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, and Oby Ezekwesili, as well as the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Sowore concluded by reaffirming his commitment to peaceful advocacy, saying: “Nnamdi Kanu should be set free. And I remain firmly committed to peacefully mobilizing for justice and freedom in this matter.”
