The Enugu chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing collapse as Governor Peter Mbah prepares to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.
APC Caretaker Chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, confirmed the move, saying Mbah’s defection will end Enugu’s long years in opposition. He described the switch as “a merger between transformation and renewed hope.”
Nwoye added that all 24 state lawmakers, 260 councillors, and several National Assembly members will join the governor in what he called “a historic political realignment” for the Southeast.
APC celebrates major political win
The APC leadership says Mbah’s entry signals a breakthrough in the Southeast. National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, urged the new Enugu leadership to consolidate the momentum.
He said the development would strengthen APC’s position ahead of 2027, noting that “our goal is to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory.”
Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, also hailed the defection, saying Enugu’s move to APC means “the Southeast has found its political voice again.”
PDP cries foul as defection wave spreads
The PDP accused the APC of using intimidation and coercion to lure its members. Its spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, said the ruling party was orchestrating defections through “blackmail and pressure.”
APC spokesman, Felix Morka, dismissed the claim, insisting the PDP was the architect of its own crisis. “They are reaping from years of corruption and leadership failure,” he said.
In Benue, reports of Senator Gabriel Suswam and ex-NAFDAC boss Dr Paul Orhii joining APC remain unclear, though banners and posters flooded Makurdi on Friday.
