Chief Osita Idu, from Umueke Inema Ovuru Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State has emerged as the new traditional ruler of the community.
Idu who is an Engineer contested with Chief Patrick Okolo a Legal Practitioner for the traditional stool of Ovuru Community.
Announcing the result on Saturday as required and approved by the constitution of Uvuru Community, the Chairman of Uzi -Uwani LG Council Chief Chijioke Ezugwu commended Uvuru people for coming out emass as well as conducting themselves in orderl and peaceful manner that made the election credible, free and fair.
Ezugwu who was represented by the Council Secretary, Mr Casmir Adamu, expressed happiness on efforts of Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Uvuru Electoral Committee, the President general of Uvuru community and everybody who contributed in one capacity or the other to make the election peaceful, credible, free and fair.
The LG chairman announced that 1064 was total votes cast with 13 being invalid, Osita Idu scored 687 votes to defeat his opponent Patrick Okolo, who scored 364 votes.
“By this result, Idu is the winner of the election and is now the new Traditional Ruler of Uvuru Community,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, Idu expressed appreciation to Uvuru people for voting him as their new traditional ruler and pledged that he would carry everybody along to make Uvuru the best community in Enugu State.
“What Uvuru people have done today is a demonstration of love, trust and confidence on me which I will not take for granted in my life time.
“I promised the community that I will not betray the love, confidence and trust the people of Uvuru reposed on me today.
“In a special way, I thank God Almighty who is the only king maker and creator of the universe,” he said.
Earlier in a remark, Mrs Ogochukwu Ozoagu, the Director of Chieftaincy in Enugu State Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs who represented the Commissioner, Deacon Okey Ogbodo and led the team from the ministry to St Patrick Catholic Church Uvuru, the venue of the election
Ogbodo commended Uvuru people for coming out emass to elect their own choice candidate who would be the new traditional ruler of the community
The Commissioner urged them to continue to conduct themselves peaceful and orderly during and after the election.
“Remember whosever you elect today will determine to an extent the progress and peace in Uvuru community.
“The ministry is here to observe and monitor the process , it’s Uvuru people that are going to vote and elect the traditional ruler of their choice.
Our correspondent reports that, the army, police, neighborhood watch among other security agencies were on hand to provide adequate security
Our reporter also reports that, the two contestants had earlier before commencement of voting signed undertaking to conduct themselves in orderly manner as well as accept the result of the election.
Our correspondent gathered that Idu the new Traditional Ruler elect of Uvuru would succeed late Igwe Daniel Ogbobe who died in 2023.
Mr Frank Egwu, the President-general of Uvuru Community.and Mr Raph Eze the Chairman of Uvuru Electoral Committee for a new traditional ruler in Uvuru, have in their seperate remarks expressed appreciation to chieftaincy ministry, Uzo-Uwani LGA, the electoral committee.
As well as all Uvuru people for their support and cooperation that made the process of electing new traditional ruler for the community a success and peaceful right from the beginning to the end.
