Edo Police Replace Ekpoma DPO After Violent Anti-Kidnapping Protest

The Edo State Police Command has replaced SP Nelson Igbinoba, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ekpoma, following last Saturday’s violent anti-kidnapping protest in the administrative headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area.

The protest, which began peacefully on January 10, 2026, escalated into widespread violence, resulting in the destruction of property, looting of stores, damage to vehicles, and the killing of livestock. Residents, primarily youths and students, led the demonstration to demand action against rising kidnappings in the area.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the appointment of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze as the new DPO. Ikoedem said Nwabueze assumed office immediately and will oversee operations in Ekpoma.

“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that, as part of ongoing security assessment and strategic repositioning in Ekpoma, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has approved the posting of CSP Tomofe Nwabueze as the new DPO with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The move is part of the command’s broader security review following the unrest, aimed at restoring order and preventing future escalations.

NEWSMEN recalls that 52 individuals arrested in connection with the protest have been charged to court and remanded at Ubiaja Correctional Centre. Their next court appearance is scheduled for February 26, 2026.

Authorities have urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement while investigations into the incident continue.
