The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called for the immediate and unconditional release of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who were remanded in custody following last Friday’s protest over insecurity in the town.
In a statement issued late Monday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, described the continued detention of the suspects—most of whom are students—as oppressive, unlawful and an abuse of power. He maintained that the protest was initially peaceful and constitutionally guaranteed before it was allegedly hijacked by hoodlums.
The PDP accused the state government of punishing victims while failing to confront those responsible for violence, warning that such actions undermine democratic expression in Edo State. It alleged that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo had failed to curb rising insecurity in Ekpoma and surrounding communities, leaving residents exposed to kidnappers and other criminal elements.
According to the party, criminalising civic protest reflects incompetence and authoritarian tendencies, stressing that peaceful demonstrations should not be treated as criminal acts. The PDP reiterated its opposition to kidnapping and killings, calling on the government to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area.
Tension had escalated in Ekpoma after a protest against persistent kidnappings turned violent on Saturday when miscreants reportedly hijacked the demonstration. During the unrest, a livestock market was attacked and the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, was vandalised—an incident condemned by the state government.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command said one person was shot by a soldier, adding that the matter had been handed over to military authorities for investigation.
