Edo Governor Okpebholo shows up with his hypeman at APC meeting in Ekiti

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, became the subject of online buzz after arriving at an All Progressives Congress (APC) meeting in Ekiti State with his official Senior Special Assistant (SSA), who also doubles as his hypeman.

The scene, caught on camera, showed the hypeman enthusiastically cheering and hyping the governor as he made his entrance.

The unusual moment immediately drew attention across social media platforms, as attendees looked on while the hypeman delivered his chants with full club-level energy.

The move reflects the growing trend of Nigerian politicians blending entertainment culture with politics, where hype, showmanship, and social media appeal now play major roles in public image.

Nigerians react with humour and disbelief

Social media users wasted no time turning the video into a viral sensation. One user wrote, “Na only in Nigeria hypeman dey collect government appointment.

Hypeman dey there to shout ‘Energy!’ while citizens dey shout ‘Economy!’” Another added, “Bro said if I’m going to the meeting, my hypeman going too, politics now got background vocals.”

Others expressed embarrassment over the display, saying such theatrics have no place in governance. “I’m catching shame on their behalf,” one comment read, while another joked, “This hype dey see money pass those club hype men.”

The mix of amusement and criticism has turned the incident into yet another example of how Nigerian politics often blurs the line between leadership and entertainment.

Blending politics with pop culture

Governor Okpebholo, who recently assumed office, has maintained a lively public image, often appearing in videos surrounded by aides and supporters chanting his praises.

The presence of a hypeman at official functions could be part of a broader attempt to connect with younger voters through humour and personality.
