The Edo State Police Command has recovered ₦300,000 extorted from a furniture maker by officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command, Benin City.
The development was confirmed in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Yamu said the officers involved have been detained and would face disciplinary action under existing Nigeria Police Force regulations.
“The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement read.
Administrative measures and public assurance
The Edo Police Command said stern administrative measures have also been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights.
Yamu added that the command, under Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, urged the public to report unprofessional conduct by officers via the Public Complaints Bureau or Complaints Response Unit on 08150999335 and 08100389992.
“The command assures the good people of Edo State that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in service delivery,” Yamu said. He commended the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, AIG Salman Dogo, for his support in entrenching accountable policing in the zone.
Context: zero-tolerance policy on extortion
This is not the first time the Edo State Police has faced scrutiny over extortion allegations. In May 2025, the Force began disciplinary proceedings against six officers, including a Chief Superintendent, following a viral extortion video along the Benin Bypass.
The officers were brought before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who described their actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”
Following that incident, Egbetokun ordered internal disciplinary measures consistent with the Force’s zero-tolerance policy for extortion and misconduct. Monday’s action against the Oba Market officers underscores the command’s commitment to maintaining public trust and enforcing accountability.
Public cooperation encouraged
The command reiterated its call for the public to promptly report any unprofessional or illegal conduct by police personnel.
It emphasised that accountability and transparency remain core priorities in all operations, and that disciplinary action would continue to be swift and firm against officers who breach these standards.
