Ten members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Ughelli South Chapter, narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening after their bus was involved in a serious accident while returning from the World Teachers’ Day celebration in Asaba, Delta State.
The accident occurred at Akiowhe Community when the bus driver, reportedly speeding in heavy rain, attempted to overtake a moving truck and rammed into it from behind.
An eyewitness said, “The accident was avoidable if the driver had been careful. It rained heavily that day, and he was on top speed when he tried to overtake the truck. About ten teachers were injured, four critically. The driver broke his thigh, and one person was revived after losing consciousness. The entire front of the bus was crushed.”
It took the combined efforts of passersby and community members to rescue the victims from the wreckage. Four of the teachers, including the driver, are said to be in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Two of the victims, speaking from their hospital beds, expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives and appreciated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his swift response.
“The governor sent three commissioners, including the PPEB Chairman and others, to visit us and ensure we are well cared for. We thank God for saving our lives; it was truly a divine escape,” one of them said.
As of press time, hospital officials confirmed that all victims were responding to treatment.
