Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appointed his nephew and Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, to his office.
Adeleke’s Move to Reposition Osun Sports
Adewusi explained that the appointment is part of the government’s renewed efforts to reposition sports in Osun and build a sustainable funding model through partnerships between the private and public sectors.
He disclosed that the state is also in advanced stages of setting up the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body for sports development, administration, and policy implementation.
“The introduction of a Sports Trust Fund will attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state, ensuring sustainable sports financing and development,” Adewusi stated.
Davido’s Role and Expected Impact
According to the Deputy Governor, Davido accepted the appointment without hesitation, expressing his readiness to contribute to the state’s sporting growth.
Adewusi expressed confidence that the music star’s global recognition and network will bring visibility and attract substantial funding to the state’s sports ecosystem.
He also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to completing the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, assuring that the facility will meet Olympic standards once finished.
“The ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium will be completed in the shortest possible time. The project aims to transform the facility into a world-class arena capable of hosting national and international events,” he said.
Public Reactions Trail Appointment
The appointment has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians, particularly residents of Osun State, as Governor Adeleke continues to appoint family members into key positions.
It will be recalled that the governor had earlier appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, son of former Governor Isiaka Adeleke, as Chairman of the Board of Local Government in 2023.
