A 32-year-old man, Madu Pius Gadzama, has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court, Lagos, over possession of various illicit drugs, including four Kilogrames of Cannabis Sativa and 68 grammes of methamphetamine.
Gadzama was convicted and slammed with the jail-term by Justice Akintayo Aluko, after he pleaded guilty to five counts charge preferred against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday, in the charge marked FHC/LAG/CR/682/2026.
The prosecutor, J. Negedu told the court that the convict was arrested with narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances at Ajiran Street, Lekki, Lagos State, on July 15, 2026.
The prohibited substances that the convict was arrested with include: four Kilogrames of Cannabis Sativa, popularly called marijuana; 68 grammes of methamphetamine, 17 grammes of Tramadol 225mg, six grammes of Swinol and 12 grammes of tramadol 100mg.
The convict’s acts according to the prosecutor were contrary to and punishable under Section 11(d) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The convict’s plea of guilt, his lawyer, pleaded with the court to be merciful on her client, saying that he was a first time offender, who did not have any record of previous conviction.
The also told the court that her client was a victim of circumstances, saying that he was not the actual owner of the drug, as he only went to sleep where the drugs were kept
The lawyer therefore prayed the court not to award maximum sentence on her client, rather he should be given a non-custodial sentence.
Based on the prosecutor’s submission of the convict’s lawyer plea for mercy, Justice Aluko sentenced the convict to 15 years on each of the counts, but ordered that all the jail-term shall run concurrently.
The judge however ordered the convict to pay the sum of N500, 000 on count 1, and N100, 000 on count two to five, making the total fine option as N1 million.
