Christian prosecution: U.S. senator demands sanction against Nigerian government officials

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has called for targeted sanctions on Nigerian government officials over rising attacks on Christian communities across the country.

The lawmaker made the statement on Monday through his official X account, where he accused authorities of enabling an environment in which mass killings occur without accountability.

Ted Cruz lauds Trump’s destination of Nigeria as CPC

Cruz thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for what he described as “strong leadership” on the issue and noted that he had already introduced legislation seeking to formally designate Nigeria over what he termed “atrocities” against Christians.

Cruz calls for sanctions

According to him, the next step should involve imposing sanctions on officials allegedly responsible for failing to protect vulnerable communities or prosecute perpetrators.

His remarks come amid growing international concern about violent attacks in parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions where religious and communal conflicts have intensified.

Human rights groups and religious bodies have repeatedly urged global powers to intervene, citing worsening insecurity and what they believe is insufficient government action.

The Nigerian federal government has consistently rejected claims of religious persecution, maintaining that the country remains secular and that ongoing violence is driven by criminality rather than targeted attacks on any faith group.

Nonetheless, Cruz’s renewed call for punitive measures has added fresh pressure on Nigerian authorities as international scrutiny continues to mount.

His words …

“Christians are being mass slaughtered in Nigeria.

Thank you to President Trump for his strong leadership and action in responding to this crisis.

I filed legislation to designate Nigeria for these atrocities, and the next steps are targeted sanctions on the government officials who create the environment for the mass murders and then fail to take action against the perpetrators.”
