An independent regulatory commission fined Chelsea £325,000, while West Ham received a £300,000 sanction for their roles in a mass confrontation that erupted deep into stoppage time of the London derby on January 31.
The governing body ruled that Chelsea failed to prevent “improper and/or provocative” behaviour, while West Ham were additionally cited for conduct that included violent elements.
The chaotic incident involved nearly 20 players and began after a clash between Marc Cucurella and Adama Traoré near the corner flag. Tensions quickly escalated, drawing in multiple teammates and substitutes.
During the melee, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was shown a straight red card following a VAR review after grabbing João Pedro by the throat.
Both clubs admitted the misconduct charges, allowing the commission to move directly to punishment. The FA described the episode as a “serious incident” and confirmed that previous disciplinary breaches were taken into account when determining the size of the fines.
Reports indicate Chelsea’s larger fine was influenced by their recent disciplinary history, with the club having committed multiple similar offences in recent seasons. The commission also rejected claims that Chelsea players were merely reacting, noting that responsibility lay with both teams for allowing the situation to escalate.
The match itself had been dramatic even before the late confrontation, with Chelsea fighting back from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge. However, the post-match focus has now shifted firmly onto discipline and governance rather than the result.
