The Nigerian Armed Forces on Thursday, launched Operation Savannah Shield, a coordinated joint task force mission to eliminate terrorists and kidnappers in Kwara and adjoining parts of Niger State.
The operation was formally flagged off by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, at Sobi Military Cantonment, Ilorin. It is intelligence-driven and structured to deliver sustained security gains.
General Oluyede warned that criminals and terrorists will no longer find safe havens in forested and ungoverned areas. “This is a deliberate, well-coordinated operation designed to deny criminal elements freedom of action,” he said, adding that troops would secure agricultural belts and protect lives and property.
He urged local communities, traditional leaders, and youth groups to provide credible intelligence, reiterating that national security is a collective responsibility. Major General Yakubu Yahaya, the Theatre Commander, will oversee operations across the Joint Operational Area.
Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State welcomed the deployment, noting it would restore public confidence, reinforce peace, and stimulate socio-economic recovery. He highlighted the importance of securing agricultural zones to ensure food production resumes without disruption.
Major General Jamal Abdulsalam, Chief of Defence Operations, emphasised that operational synergy and unified command remain pivotal to mission success.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by Service Chiefs, senior officers, traditional rulers, and key stakeholders, signalling national commitment to security.
