A 40-year-old woman from Nakuru County has shared a deeply personal account of her life journey, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by vulnerable women seeking survival in unfamiliar cities.
Growing up in Bahati, she describes a difficult childhood marked by feelings of neglect and rejection within her own family. By the time she finished school, she was already a mother of four, struggling to make ends meet and constantly at odds with her situation. Determined to change her circumstances, she accepted what seemed like a promising job opportunity in Mombasa.
However, her hopes quickly faded after arrival. What she initially believed to be domestic work soon revealed itself to be something entirely different. She found herself in an environment where choices were limited, and survival often meant adapting to difficult and morally complex situations. Despite the shock, she says financial pressure pushed her to continue, sending money back home to support her children.
Over time, she observed patterns among other women in similar circumstances—many seeking ways to escape poverty through relationships with wealthy foreign men visiting the coast. Conversations among her peers often revolved around strategies to attract such partners, with some resorting to extreme and costly practices believed to improve their chances.
While she did not personally take part in such rituals, she recalls how desperation drove others to pursue them, hoping for a breakthrough that would change their lives permanently. For many, the dream was not luxury, but stability—a chance to provide for their families and leave behind a life they never intended to enter.
Eventually, she managed to leave that environment and begin rebuilding her life, carrying with her lessons shaped by hardship. Her story highlights the complex intersection of poverty, opportunity, and survival, offering a sobering reflection on the lengths people may go to in search of a better future.
