Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent attack in Plateau State, declaring that Nigeria must stop “mourning what should have been prevented.”
Obi made the statement following reports of a deadly assault in Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, which left several residents dead and others injured.
Describing the situation as deeply troubling, Obi said the recurring violence in Plateau highlights the persistent insecurity faced by ordinary Nigerians.
“The recurring loss of innocent lives in Plateau State reminds us, yet again, of the insecurity innocent citizens face in our nation without any protection,” he said.
He lamented what he described as a growing normalization of tragedy in the country, stressing that such attacks have become too frequent.
“It is unacceptable that these attacks happen with such frequency, and even more unacceptable that there seems to be no decisive, sustained strategy to end them. No nation or leader normalises tragedy,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that the protection of lives must be treated as a top priority by those in authority.
“The safety of Nigerian lives must become non-negotiable. We cannot continue to mourn what should have been prevented. Enough is enough,” he added.
Obi also extended condolences to the families of victims, praying for the repose of the deceased and comfort for those affected.
“My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he said.
The attack in Plateau has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for urgent action to address insecurity across the country, with stakeholders urging the government to adopt more effective and sustained security measures.
