According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, March 26, 2026, in comparing Nigeria to India, the previous presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, emphasised the country’s ability to prosper despite its diverse population.
In a post on his verified X account, he expressed his opinions and stressed that Nigeria might learn from India’s democratic example.
Obi made the observation that India has become a world leader in democracy despite its vast size (almost 3.5 times that of Nigeria) and diversity of religions and cultures.
Obi brought up the fact that, despite having a population of over a billion and over a billion voters, India manages to pull in around 700 million people every election.
He emphasised that the administration has done a good job of handling this level of democratic participation, with the election processes being recorded in real-time and, for the most part, error-free.
He sees this as proof that, with the right safeguards in place, even very diverse and populous nations can sustain genuine democratic regimes.
Though smaller than India’s, he argued that Nigeria’s large and talented workforce might help the country develop and remain stable if properly utilised.
Rather than seeing the country’s diversity as a cause for division, Obi stressed the significance of utilising it.
He made the implication that, like India, Nigeria might achieve its full potential with the help of strategic governance and honest elections.
Additionally, Obi praised the effectiveness of India’s election administration, mentioning the careful preparation, coordinated logistics, and technology integration that enable millions of voters to cast their ballots without any problems.
He made the suggestion that Nigeria, a country plagued by electoral problems including delays and irregularities, may look to this example of efficiency for inspiration.
Obi suggested that Nigeria may improve its political systems by studying other varied democracies.
In his speech, Obi considered other countries’ experiences with racial, cultural, and religious diversity and how they managed it.
These nations, he said, including India, show how diversity of culture and society can lead to prosperity rather than strife.
Obi argued that, with persistent application of democratic principles and inclusive policies, Nigeria’s intricate social fabric might be used for the benefit of the country’s growth.
Also mentioned by Obi was the enormous amount of civic involvement shown by the Indian electorate.
He made the astute observation that other nations struggling with diverse and large populations can learn from the credibility and openness of India’s elections, which have helped strengthen democracy in that country.
If the voting system in Nigeria were to be improved and run more smoothly, he suggested, it could attract voters and encourage them to get involved to the same extent.
He stated, “Nigeria is not the only nation shaped by a mosaic of tribes, languages, and religions. Around the world, several countries with similar diversity are striving—often successfully—to turn it into a source of strength rather than division. India serves as a classic example.”
