Four young children have been killed in a stabbing attack at a daycare centre, police authorities in Uganda have confirmed.
The victims, aged between two and three years, were attacked at a kindergarten on Thursday.
According to police, the suspect, identified as an adult male, reportedly gained access to the facility by posing as a parent.
He was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody, while authorities continue investigations to determine his motive.
Reports indicated that residents attempted to attack the suspect as he tried to flee, but a security guard from a nearby church intervened and restrained him before law enforcement officers arrived.
Security personnel later fired warning shots into the air to disperse the gathering crowd before taking the suspect into custody.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had visited the kindergarten on two earlier occasions, seeking to enroll a child.
On Thursday, he reportedly returned to complete registration before carrying out the attack.
Authorities confirmed that four children died during the incident, while the remaining children at the daycare were safely reunited with their parents.
The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, visited the scene and urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
Officials stated that the motive behind the attack has not yet been established, and members of the public with relevant information have been encouraged to assist police with ongoing inquiries.
