[BREAKING NEWS] 2027: We Will Back ADC For Presidential Election – NNPP Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson

According to a report by Channels Television on Monday, March 30, 2026, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced it will enter into an alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 presidential election, while still fielding candidates for other positions across the country.

NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, made the disclosure on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Johnson stated that despite the defection of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NNPP remains committed to contesting elections at various levels. “The NNPP will continue to participate in elections. At the presidential level, we will coordinate with the ADC, and possibly on some national seats, but we will still have candidates for other positions across the ballot,” he explained.

The NNPP spokesman further revealed that extensive consultations had taken place among opposition leaders prior to Kwankwaso’s decision to formally join the ADC. He emphasized that the defection would not undermine the party’s plans or electoral relevance.

“There have been numerous discussions among opposition stakeholders, and it was concluded that a united front would better serve Nigerians and provide a credible alternative in 2027. Kwankwaso is expected to formally register with the ADC in Kano State today,” Johnson said.

Kwankwaso’s move to the ADC followed weeks of strategic talks involving key figures in the opposition, members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and ADC leaders. The former Kano State governor has engaged in high-level meetings aimed at building a coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recently, he met with prominent political leaders, including the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and Bayelsa West Senator Seriake Dickson. Political analysts see this initiative as part of a broader opposition strategy to consolidate resources and political influence ahead of the 2027 polls.

The development comes amid ongoing tension between Kwankwaso and his former political protégé, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf. Yusuf recently defected from the NNPP to the APC along with several lawmakers and party officials, a move Kwankwaso publicly condemned as a betrayal of the movement he established.
