Political analyst Usman Yusuf has raised concerns over perceived regional bias in anti-corruption enforcement, arguing that key northern leaders have faced scrutiny while leaders from the South-West have largely avoided similar accountability. His remarks were made in a video shared on Symfoni.
Yusuf pointed out that several prominent northern politicians and officials have been investigated or arrested by anti-corruption agencies, highlighting a pattern he says disproportionately affects leaders from the northwest.
He listed several northern figures who have faced investigations, including himself, Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, and Governor Nasir El-Rufai, among others. He contrasted this with southern leaders, whom he described as largely untouched by enforcement actions.
“You’re not listening; you’re grabbing all the opposition leaders. We’ve not seen a single Yoruba man grabbed by EFCC or ICPC. Tambuwal, myself, Malami, and Nasir El-Rufai are all from the northwest; we’re all Fulanis. What’s the name? Igbira man, Yahaya Bello, we have seen Ngige and Emefiele. We’re not talking about whatever they did, but geographically, Yorubas are saints,” Yusuf added.
