The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of Bebeji, Rogo and Bagwai Local Government Areas for a period of three months.
Politics Nigeria reports that the decision was announced on Tuesday, marking a major development in the state’s local government administration.
The suspension was disclosed by the Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on New Media, Ibrahim Adam, through a statement shared on his verified Facebook page.
According to him, “The Chairmen of Bebeji, Rogo and Bagwai Local Government Areas have been suspended from office for three months by the Kano State House of Assembly.”
The announcement immediately sparked reactions across the state, as residents and political stakeholders awaited further clarification on the reasons behind the action.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State House of Assembly had not released an official statement detailing the circumstances that led to the suspension of the three council chairmen.
Likewise, no allegations or findings have been publicly presented against the affected officials.
Local government councils play a critical role in implementing policies, executing community projects and coordinating development efforts at the grassroots level. Any disruption in leadership often attracts public attention because of its potential impact on local administration.
However, the affected chairmen have also not publicly reacted to the suspension as of the time of this report.
More information is expected in the coming hours as the Kano State Government and the State Assembly provide clarification on the matter.
In a related development, this is not the first time the Kano State House of Assembly has taken disciplinary action against a local government chairman.
On August 13, 2025, the Assembly suspended the Chairman of Rano Local Government Council, Alhaji Muhammad Naziru Ya’u, for three months following allegations bordering on misconduct and financial irregularities.
The decision came after lawmakers considered the report of the House Committee on Public Petition during plenary presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
Presenting the committee’s findings, the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Hussaini Dala, said the investigation was triggered by a petition submitted by nine out of the ten councillors in the local government.
The petition accused the chairman of financial recklessness, diversion of fertiliser meant for farmers, unauthorised sale of shops and other administrative infractions.
Explaining the committee’s position, Dala stated that, “Ya’u confessed to increasing the price of fertiliser by N2,000 per bag during the last sales exercise, in violation of the state government’s directive that the commodity be sold at N20,000.”
He further told lawmakers that the chairman allegedly justified the increase as a means of providing logistics support.
The committee also raised concerns over the alleged diversion of a feeder road project from its approved location without proper authorisation.
Although the suspended chairman denied the allegations against him, the Assembly resolved that a temporary suspension was necessary to allow a full investigation into the matter.
Dala said, “After careful deliberations, the House adopted the committee’s recommendations, effectively suspending the chairman and placing the local government council under temporary oversight.”
The Assembly subsequently directed the vice chairman to assume leadership in an acting capacity while the investigation continued.
