Breaking: INEC Boss, Mahmood hands over to new acting Chairman, Agbamuche

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has witnessed a change in leadership as Professor Mahmood Yakubu officially handed over the affairs of the commission to May Agbamuche, who now serves as the Acting National Chairman.

Agbamuche, who is the oldest serving National Commissioner at INEC, assumed her new role following a formal handover ceremony held on Tuesday at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The transition took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and many other senior officials of the electoral body.

In his remarks during the handover, Professor Yakubu expressed confidence in Agbamuche’s competence and experience to steer the commission effectively.

He urged other national commissioners, directors, and staff members to give her their full cooperation and support until a substantive chairman is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

Yakubu, who has served as INEC Chairman since November 2015, thanked the commission’s staff and stakeholders for their dedication throughout his tenure, particularly during the conduct of several general and off-cycle elections across the country.

May Agbamuche is expected to oversee the commission’s ongoing electoral preparations and administrative activities, ensuring the continuity of INEC’s operations until new leadership is officially constituted.

This new development has triggered numerous reactions on social media as Nigerians expressed their thoughts.
