Breaking: House of Reps Reverses Decision On Bill To Remove VP, Governors’ Immunity

The House of Representatives has reversed its earlier decision on a bill aimed at stripping the Vice President, governors, and their deputies of immunity.

The reversal followed a motion introduced on Thursday by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, prompting lawmakers to reconsider their position.

The bill, which had already advanced to its second reading, sought to amend Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution. It proposed retaining immunity for the President while removing it for other high-ranking executive officials.

Just a day prior, during Wednesday’s plenary session, the House, under the leadership of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, had approved the bill for a second reading and referred it to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further evaluation.

Proponents of the bill, including its sponsor Solomon Bob, contended that revoking immunity for these officials would enhance the fight against corruption and promote greater accountability in governance.
