In a recent interview with Daily Independent on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Kenny Okolugbo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Public Affairs Analyst, has commented on the current state of Nigeria’s major political parties, comparing the fortunes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC ahead of their upcoming conventions.
Okolugbo stated that the PDP has experienced a significant decline in political influence and noted that the party started with 14 governors but now has only two.
He described this as a pity and highlighted it as a clear sign of the party’s weakening position, according to him, the PDP’s troubles reflect deeper issues within the party, including internal disputes and poor management of party structures.
In contrast, Okolugbo stated the APC has largely kept its house in order and highlighted that the party has maintained unity despite inevitable complaints from members seeking leadership positions.
He suggested that the APC’s approach to party management, including zoning and consensus-building, has helped the party remain stable and organized.
Okolugbo noted that conventions are important for maintaining party structures, he said that the APC’s consistent handling of conventions ensures continuity and order, this, he added, positions the party to avoid internal crises and strengthens its prospects for future elections.
He stated that while the PDP struggles with loss of influence and internal disagreements, the APC has succeeded in creating a more stable framework, he implied that effective internal management is key to a party’s survival and electoral success.
”For the PDP, It’s a pity that they started with 14 governors, and now they have only two governors in the PDP. On the APC, you can say the APC has put its house in order,” he said.
