At least eight suspected bandits have been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED), believed to have been planted for security forces, detonated along Lukope Road in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on March 20 along the Kurebe–Kushaka axis, a known route frequently used by armed groups operating within the forested region.
According to the sources, the explosive device, allegedly emplaced by the bandits to target advancing troops, was triggered when members of the group inadvertently rode over it while travelling on motorcycles.
The explosion reportedly killed about eight of the suspects instantly, while several others sustained injuries.
The affected group is believed to be affiliated with the notorious bandit leader, Dogo Gide, and was reportedly en route to the Lukope area at the time of the incident.
Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma, Sector 1, responded swiftly to the scene and have since intensified patrols across the area to prevent further security breaches.
The incident has heightened tension among residents of Kushaka, Kurebe, Gbato, and surrounding communities amid fears of possible reprisal attacks.
Local stakeholders have called for proactive measures to reassure residents and strengthen security presence, while security agencies continue to monitor the situation and maintain increased patrols along vulnerable routes to ensure stability.
