Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has stirred fresh political debate following a series of strong claims shared on his Facebook page, expressing confidence in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the post shared via his Facebook page, Melaye repeatedly declared, “YES WE CAN! ADC CAN DO IT! YES WE CAN!!!!” while presenting what he described as “empirical evidence” to support the opposition’s chances of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former lawmaker highlighted the 2023 presidential election results, noting that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso secured 997,279 votes in Kano State alone—figures he claimed surpassed the total votes garnered by the APC in 11 states, including Bayelsa, Delta, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo.
Melaye also argued that despite the APC having 22 sitting governors during the election, the party only won in 12 states, suggesting that several governors were unable to influence electoral outcomes in their favour.
He further claimed that the combined votes of opposition candidates—Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso of the NNPP—stood at over 14.5 million, representing about 64 percent of total votes cast, compared to President Bola Tinubu’s 8.7 million votes, which he put at 36 percent.
According to Melaye, the opposition also secured victories in 25 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while the APC won in 12 states. He added that out of 12 sitting governors who contested Senate seats in 2023, only three were successful, which he said reflects declining political influence among incumbents.
The outspoken politician also pointed out that key opposition figures built their support bases within a short time frame, noting that Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Kwankwaso all recorded significant electoral performances within months of aligning with their respective parties.
Melaye expressed optimism that with about 12 months to the next general elections, opposition forces have sufficient time to reorganise and mount a formidable challenge.
He described the reported alignment of major political figures—including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, Abubakar Malami, Rauf Aregbesola, Kashim Imam, and others within the ADC—as “not just a mere political alignment but a political earthquake.”
Concluding his post, Melaye declared, “Redemption is here,” insisting that the figures he presented go beyond rhetoric and reflect a viable path to victory for the opposition.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions across social media, with supporters praising his optimism while critics question the accuracy and interpretation of the statistics cited.
