BAT,Abacha: “I Will Not Sit While Persons Like Kperogi,Momodu Make Unjust,Unfair Comparisons–Omokri

According to a report by The Nation on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Reno Omokri has addressed recent comparisons made between Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Sani Abacha, describing such claims as inappropriate and lacking a proper basis.

Speaking on the issue, Omokri reacted to ongoing criticisms from some public commentators who have questioned the current administration’s approach to governance and opposition politics.

He maintained that drawing parallels between a democratic government and a past military regime does not reflect the realities of Nigeria’s political history.

The discussion surrounding these comparisons has involved voices such as Farooq Kperogi and Dele Momodu, who have at different times expressed concerns about the state of opposition parties in the country.

Their remarks have pointed to internal challenges within parties like the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party.

In their view, developments within these parties have raised questions about the broader political environment.

Omokri, however, rejected these positions and insisted that the current administration should not be compared to any form of military dictatorship.

He explained that the period under General Abacha, which began after the events of the 1993 Nigerian coup, was marked by a different style of governance.

That era, which lasted until Abacha’s death in 1998, is often remembered for its strict military control and limited political freedoms.

Omokri argued that placing a democratically elected government within the same context ignores key distinctions between the two periods.

He also responded to claims that the present administration has played a role in challenges faced by opposition parties.

According to him, internal disagreements within political organisations are common and should not automatically be attributed to external influence.

He stressed that political parties are responsible for managing their own affairs, including leadership disputes and organisational issues.

From his perspective, attributing such developments to the presidency does not fully consider the internal dynamics of those parties.

In addition, concerns have been raised by critics about the role of the judiciary in the current political landscape.

Some have suggested that judicial decisions in political matters have affected public confidence.

Omokri addressed this issue by stating that such concerns should be examined carefully and within the framework of established legal processes.

He maintained that institutions of government continue to operate within their constitutional roles, even as debates about their performance remain part of public discourse.

He said, “Having fought against that despicable regime, I will not sit idly by while persons like Farooq Kperogi and Dele Momodu make unjust and unfair comparisons between that dictatorial government and the democratic Tinubu administration.”
