The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has successfully hosted its 2nd Town Hall Meeting on Tax Reforms today, featuring a keynote session by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. The event brought together policymakers, tax experts, and hundreds of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) owners to bridge the gap between complex fiscal policies and the realities of running a small business in Nigeria.
Recognizing that “tax talk” is often the leading cause of headaches for entrepreneurs, the forum focused on simplifying compliance, eliminating double taxation myths, and introducing new digital incentives designed to keep small businesses afloat. The Town Hall organised by SMEDAN serves as a critical bridge between high-level policy and the “Main Street” economy, focusing on how the nation’s evolving tax landscape is being redesigned to shield the poor while empowering small businesses.
The highlight of the event was the presentation by Taiwo Oyedele, who deconstructed complex fiscal jargon into clear, actionable hope for the MSME sector. Oyedele emphasized that the core philosophy of the current reforms is to “tax the fruit, not the seed.”
Key takeaways from his session included:
· The “Poverty Shield”: Clear explanations on how new reforms aim to exempt low-income earners and nano-businesses from burdensome tax obligations.
· Eliminating “Nuisance Taxes”: A commitment to removing multiple levies that disproportionately affect the informal sector and small-scale traders.
· Price Stability: How the removal of hidden taxes on essential goods and logistics will help curb inflation and protect the purchasing power of the average Nigerian.
· Simplification of Tax Codes: Discussions on streamlining the multiple tax levies that currently burden small-scale operators.
· Incentive Awareness: Educating MSMEs on existing tax holidays and rebates they might be eligible for but aren’t currently claiming.
In his remarks, the Director General of SMEDAN Dr Charles Odii noted that having the Presidential Committee present allowed for a “no-filter” conversation. “The presence of Mr. Oyedele here today ensures that our entrepreneurs aren’t just hearing about laws; they are participating in a movement that prioritizes their survival and growth,” According to Dr Odii, SMEDAN remains the apex agency for MSME development in Nigeria, dedicated to providing the tools, policy advocacy, and environment necessary for small businesses to thrive. He promised that similar engagements will be carried out in other locations to ensure that the nano micro small enterprises are supported to experience Growth and Prosperity as promised by the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The event ended with a spirited Q&A session where business owners spoke directly to Mr Taiwo Oyedele and the DG of SMEDAN on their mixed feelings about government efforts in promoting the ease of doing business in Nigeria. According to Taiwo Oyedele “We are building a system where the vulnerable are protected, and the small business owner is treated as a partner in progress, not a target.” While Odii reiterated his commitment to ensure every small business owner is protected through the establishment of the MSME Council in every State of the Federation.
