Army Refutes Viral Video, Says Troops Only Rescued NYSC, INEC Officials in Awka

‎By Chimezie Godfrey

‎The Nigerian Army has refuted a viral video alleging that one of its officers took part in electoral activities during the November 8 election in Awka, Anambra State.

‎The Army, in a statement on Sunday by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, described the report as “false, misleading, and lacking context.”

‎According to Ayeni, at about 8:20 p.m. on the said date, an officer from the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support) received a distress call from NYSC officials and INEC staff who reported that corps members and other election workers were being held hostage by suspected political thugs following the disappearance of the polling unit’s collation officer.

‎ “A rapid response team of two officers and twelve soldiers was immediately dispatched to the location. On arrival, the troops met a tense situation involving several political stakeholders, including the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, who questioned the Army’s presence,” the statement read.

‎Ayeni noted that despite provocation, the soldiers maintained restraint and professionalism, rescued the corps members and INEC officials, and escorted them safely to the INEC office, where collation later resumed peacefully.

‎He added that the circulating video was being misinterpreted and that the Army’s action was strictly a humanitarian and security intervention to protect citizens and safeguard the electoral process.

‎The Army spokesperson said the Division would also liaise with the Anambra State Government to ensure better cooperation and understanding during future security operations.

‎ “The Nigerian Army remains committed to neutrality, professionalism, and the protection of democratic institutions. We urge members of the public to disregard false narratives and support the military’s efforts to maintain peace during elections,” Ayeni added.
