Army Probes Death Of Soldier, Wife In Niger Barracks

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a soldier and his wife at the Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.

The couple, identified as Lance Corporal Femi and his wife, were found lifeless in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the cantonment on 11 October 2025.

The tragic discovery has thrown the military community into shock, with residents still struggling to comprehend the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to a statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, preliminary findings revealed that the soldier was on duty within the barracks but had sought permission from his superior to briefly attend to personal matters before his death.

“The remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident,” the statement said.

It expressed deep regret over the loss and extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.

Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured that the investigation would be thorough, adding that the findings would be made public.

He appealed for public understanding and cooperation, pledging that preventive measures would be taken to avert a recurrence.
