The Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into the sudden deaths of a serving soldier and his wife in Ilorin.
Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, stated on Monday that Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were found dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment.
Preliminary reports indicate that the soldier had been on duty within the cantonment and had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters before returning to duty.
The remains of the deceased have been preserved while a detailed investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. We also pray for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Captain Nwankwo said.
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and that findings will be communicated once concluded.
The army emphasized that it expects the understanding and cooperation of the public during the investigation and pledged that measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
