Mr Nicholas Ukachukwu, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Anambra Nov. 8 governorship election has donated ₦3 million to flood victims in Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA) of the State.
Ukachukwu made the donation during a visit to Ogidi, Idemili LGA, on Friday to commiserate with the victims of the Sunday/Monday flood disaster in the area.
“For immediate relief, I am giving ₦3 million to support the victims and help meet their urgent needs. May God comfort and strengthen you all,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the disaster left no fewer than 30 families in Ireh-Obinagu, Ogidi area homeless.
Many people sustained injuries, several others had their houses flooded, vehicles, farmlands and other property submerged by the flood.
Also speaking, Sen. Uche Ekwunife, the deputy governorship candidate promised to mobilise votes for the party in the Idemili LGA.
Responding, the victims said that Ukachukwu was the only governorship candidate in the state that had visited the area out of nearly two dozen governorship candidates currently campaigning for votes in the election.
Mr Izuchukwu Obidi, a victim, said since the incident, the Anambra administration had not done enough to ameliorate their plight.
Also Mr Ekene Ude, a resident of Ire-Ndiagu in the area, said the community had battled flooding for over two decades without any meaningful intervention from the authorities.
“The evacuation you’re seeing now started just yesterday, and even now, we’re still struggling to drain the water.
“The flood flows down from seven neighbouring towns and settles here in our community. We are crying out for help,” he said.
According to Ude, Anambra needs a people-oriented governor; one who will truly listen to their pains and challenges.
“We have seen that quality in Mr Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC governorship candidate.
“He came here personally to sympathise with us, listened to our plight and assured us that he will tackle this flood menace. It shall indeed be well with him,” he said.
Another resident, Mrs Favour Metu, described the flooding experience as a nightmare.
“The flood has made life so difficult for us, it’s truly terrible. We desperately need help.
‘What we need now is a leader who means his words, not another politician with fake and empty promises. Our votes and prayers are for Mr Nicholas Ukachukwu.
‘We believe that with the APC in power in Anambra, the story of our people will be rewritten for good,” she said.
NAN also reports that Ukachukwu was accompanied on the visit by the state APC Chairman, Mr Basil Ejidike and the state Woman Leader, Mrs Maria Ejielo, among others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
