Anambra Declares School-Free Day to Honour Teachers

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared Tuesday, October 7, a school-free day to celebrate and honour teachers across the state.

The announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, in a statement on Monday in Awka. She explained that since the 2025 World Teachers’ Day fell on a Sunday, the governor approved Tuesday for official celebrations.

The statement noted that the Solution Parents League will hold a mega endorsement march to commend Governor Soludo’s initiatives in the education sector. The Association of Private School Owners will also join the event, with teachers, parents, and school proprietors expected to assemble at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, by 8:00 a.m.

Across Nigeria, teachers marked World Teachers’ Day on Sunday by renewing calls for improved welfare, better working conditions, and full implementation of the 65-year retirement age policy.

At nationwide events, teachers’ unions and education stakeholders highlighted concerns over the slow implementation of policies, inadequate remuneration, and insufficient teaching facilities, which they say continue to undermine the quality of education. They urged federal and state governments to prioritise teachers’ welfare and fulfil promises made to the sector.
