‎The Headquarters Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI, has commenced an investigation into allegations that troops shot and killed one Abdulrahman Mustapha in Maiduguri, Borno State.

‎The incident, which reportedly occurred on March 22, 2026, at the Polo axis near the Federal High Court, has sparked outrage on social media, with claims describing it as an extrajudicial killing.

‎In a statement signed by the Media Information Officer, Sani Uba, the military said it had taken the allegations seriously and initiated appropriate processes to ascertain the facts.

‎“The Theatre Command regards these allegations as very serious and has accordingly initiated appropriate processes to establish the facts,” the statement read.

‎However, the Command noted that preliminary operational indicators suggest the incident may not be straightforward.

‎“Preliminary operational indicators suggest that the incident… may not be straightforward and could have underlying security implications,” it stated.

‎According to the military, initial findings indicate the possibility that troops may have encountered individuals suspected to be linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP elements.

‎The statement added that the deceased allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier’s rifle, an action described as a direct threat.

‎“Reports indicate that the individual allegedly attempted to snatch a soldier’s rifle… indicative of hostile intent,” it said.

‎The Command also disclosed that multiple identification cards bearing different names, including a foreign ID from Niger Republic, were recovered from the deceased.

‎It further stated that substances suspected to be cannabis and a bottle of cough syrup were found, while two unidentified women said to be with the individual fled the scene.

‎“These preliminary details remain subject to verification and should not be construed as definitive conclusions,” the military added.

‎It assured that a comprehensive and impartial investigation is ongoing to determine compliance with Rules of Engagement and operational procedures.

‎The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.
