Alexx Ekubo laid to rest amid tears

The Nigerian entertainment industry bid a final, heartfelt farewell to one of its brightest stars as Nollywood actor Alex Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke was laid to rest on Thursday, June 18, 2026, in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State. 

The 40-year-old actor, model, entertainer, and philanthropist passed away on May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos after a courageous battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer. His death sent shockwaves through the Nollywood community and beyond, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans, and public figures. 

The burial ceremony drew family members, colleagues, and fans who came to pay their final respects to one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces. The funeral service was held at Mary Slessor School, Amanagwu, before his interment at the family compound in Ujari Village.

Career and Early Life

Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Ekubo hailed from Arochukwu in Abia State. He studied Law at the University of Calabar before transitioning into the entertainment industry, where he built a career spanning acting, modelling, and public speaking.

He first gained national attention as the first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant, a platform that opened doors to film and television roles. His screen debut came in Sinners in the House (2003), and he went on to appear in numerous Nollywood productions, including Weekend Getaway, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, The Bling Lagosians, Afamefuna, and A Sunday Affair.

Known for his charisma and versatility, Ekubo became a familiar figure in romantic dramas and contemporary Nollywood films, earning a loyal fan base across Nigeria and beyond.

Funeral Proceedings

The burial rites began with a service of songs in Lagos on June 10, followed by a wake-keep in Arochukwu on June 17. The final ceremony was marked by emotional tributes from family, friends, and colleagues in the film industry.

Several Nollywood actors were in attendance, sharing memories of the late actor and describing him as warm, disciplined, and deeply committed to his craft. The event reflected both celebration and grief, as mourners honoured his life and contributions.

Legacy

Alex’s career is remembered for his consistent screen presence and ability to connect with audiences across genres. Beyond acting, he was also involved in humanitarian efforts and public speaking engagements.

Ekubo’s story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of health awareness, particularly regarding cancers that often strike silently. His vibrant personality and contributions to Nollywood will continue to inspire upcoming generations of actors and entertainers.
